Here’s where you can experience the best that the North Carolina Mountains have to offer in one place – panoramic views, outrageous rock formations, a 404-foot waterfall, and trails in abundance. Biltmore Estate
Completed in 1895 by George W. Vanderbilt, Biltmore House is a 250-room French Renaissance chateau, the largest private residence in the country, and a National Historic Landmark. The Estate receives approximately one million guests annually visiting the home, its 75 acres of gardens and Biltmore Estate Winery. Richard Morris Hunt designed the mansion and Frederick Law Olmsted, landscape architect of New York’s Central Park, landscaped the original 125,000 acre estate (now 8,000 acres). Today Vanderbilt’s grandson, William A.V. Cecil, owns the estate. On view in Biltmore House is Vanderbilt’s original collection of priceless antiques and art objects, including works by Pierre Auguste Renoir, John Singer Sargent and James MacNeil Whistler. The estate also features America’s most visited winery, where Biltmore Estate Wine Company produces approximately 120,000 cases of wine annually. Overnight accommodations are available at the four-star; four-diamond Inn on Biltmore Estate opened in March 2001.
