During a recent journey through the Northern Neck region of Virginia, on a picture-perfect peninsula, we discovered the quaint yet elegant Tides Inn. This lovely 106-room property invites guests to choose between pure relaxation amidst its bucolic setting or activities such as golf, boating, canoeing, tennis, bicycling, and more.

We arrived by roadway, but you can also make your way here via the waterways as you dock your watercraft at the resort’s busy full-service 64-slip transient marina. Gracious landscaping of the verdant grounds immediately imparts a sense of peaceful relaxation on the arriving visitor. A meticulous, recently completed renovation of the Tides Inn has culminated in elegant British Colonial style, recalling the era of distinguished travels to exotic ports-of-call.

Captivating surroundings and peaceful waters gently coax visitors to relax in luxurious settings. Upon entering the lobby, we were impressed by the stunning waterfront views that were comparable only to the lovely vistas from the guest rooms and suites. From a bluff overlooking nearby Carter Creek, the romantic view of the sprawling lawn – complete with stately shade trees, flowering shrubbery bedecked with colorful annuals – and beyond to the Tides Marina and the more distant Rappahannock River creates a dreamy and relaxing mood.

As a member of the prestigious Leading Small Hotels of the World, the Tides Inn features top-notch accommodations, amenities, dining and services befitting this elite group. Guest rooms are generously appointed in warm earth tones, while mahogany plantation shutters flank the windows. Among the several eating establishments from which to choose you can take your evening meal in “The Dining Room.” Here, the warm colors of the setting sun impart a feeling of pure bliss as you enjoy your repast. Naturally, the regional cuisine features bounty from the Chesapeake Bay waters, such as tantalizing crab dishes and other seafood selections that showcase the expertise of the chef.

Sportsmen can test their skills at the Golden Eagle Golf Club. The splendor of the course, one that reflects the Inn’s commitment to the preservation of the natural environment, belies its challenges as it takes golfers around a 50-acre lake. In addition to enjoying the magnificent property, guests are encouraged to explore the area’s quaint towns and to discover the many nearby historic homes. But the best way to fully appreciate the allure of the locality is from the water. Take a morning or afternoon cruise on the “High Tide,” a 60-foot cabin cruiser. Or, hop on a whiskey run on the “Miss Ann,” a 127-foot yacht listed on the National Historic Register. Guides will provide insight and information on the local history and fishing trade as you slip quietly through the waters.

To add the ultimate touch of luxury to your visit, allow yourself to be pampered at “The Spa at The Tides Inn.” Both traditional and innovative treatments are offered, enabling you to rejuvenate body, mind, and spirit in a tranquil setting. The beautiful creek-side pool is the perfect spot from which to enjoy the view as you relax.

Amenities and views aside, however, the most remarkable feature of the Tides Inn is the time-honored tradition of true Southern hospitality that remain yours to discover at this picturesque retreat. Attain a sense of inner peace that springs from the spirit of the area and the seamless luxury that greets you at every turn.
